International Affairs Office  

The International Affairs Office (IAO) is responsible for Shenzhen University's international exchanges and cooperation by executing the university¡¯s policies. Guided by the President of Shenzhen University, IAO is committed to seeking cooperative relationships with overseas universities from all over the world in an effort to build SZU¡¯s international profile. Right now, SZU has over 60 partner or collaborative institutions of higher learning throughout the world.
  
IAO facilitates and coordinates international academic exchange and cooperation in teaching and research including exchange of students and staff, undertaking international conferences, drafting cooperative policies, assisting the management of staff and students visits or study by handling passport and visa applications, receiving international guests, intaking International employees, and attending to affairs designated by the University President.   
 

IAO has established several sub-offices to handle these broad responsibilities: Division of General Affairs; Division for Exchange Programs; Division for Joint Programs; Division for International Student Affairs; Division of International Teachers and Experts (+86-755-26536107). The Chaoxi Building and the Dormitory of International Students are also under the administration of IAO.

Department for International Students

The history of Department for International Students can be traced back to 1987, since then it has enrolled and trained more than 6700 international students from over 40 countries and regions. The Department for International Students is a specialized institute responsible for affairs of international students such as admission, daily administration and language teaching. At present, the department consists of over 40 teachers, among whom 6 professors, 5 associate professors and 5 doctorate degree holders. It also has an office offering HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) services. All the staff members have been working together as an international and professional team full of energy and innovation. With this team, we can tell with confidence that Shenzhen University is one of the best choices for international students who want to study in China.

Some International Teachers Working at SZU

Mr. David Alan Dodge graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1993 (B.A.) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School in 1997 (J.D.). Subsequent to the award of his Doctorate in law, David participated in an LL.M. research program in international law at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand in 1997 and promulgated research regarding the international cooperative management of the Mekong River¡¯s natural resources.  Mr. Dodge is currently licensed to practice law in Michigan, the District of Columbia and California.

Mr. Christopher Sean Hall received his degree in English Literature and Theory. His specialties are Critical Theory and Cultural Studies, especially Marx, Freud, Feminist theory, Structuralism, Post-structuralism, and Post-modernism. Regarding literature, He focused on 19th century and 20th century, and for his final project studied forms of identity-production. He teaches British and American Literature and Culture, as well as Tourism English.

Dr. Charles Kieffer, American, received his B.A. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin and his Ed.D. from Alliant International University in San Diego, California. His Ed.D. and work history has focused on university management and leadership. As a professor at Shenda, Dr. Kieffer teaches a wide-range of English topics including reading and writing, verbal communication, and English for such subjects as leadership development, psychology, and science.

Mr. Bradley Curtis Philips earned a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from Central Michigan University, which was originally a teacher's college. It's the same university where his great-grandmother earned her degree from. This course specialized in Literature, Linguistics and also contained a teaching component. Bradley specialized in teaching Composition and also specialized in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Now Bradley is teaching various English courses for the Foreign Language Department, including American Popular Culture.

James Roth has a master¡¯s degree in English from Western State College, in Gunnison Colorado, and over fifteen years teaching experience.  His area of interest is natural language acquisition, relying on the principles of the lexical approach.  Before coming to China he taught in Japan.  During his vacations he returns to the United States to visit his family in south Alabama.

Mr. George Costas is from New York and Michigan, in the USA.  George has been living in China for 7 years and this is his third year here at SZU.  George has an MBA from Long Island University and a TESOL certificate from TEFL International in Zhuhai. He is a Professor of English and teaches oral presentation and writing.

Professor Robert H. Smitheram obtained Ph.D. degree in Classical Chinese Literature from the Asian Studies Department of Stanford University in 1987. From 1987-2001, taught at major colleges and universities in the United States, including Williams College, Wellesley College, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Middlebury College. From 2001-2007, worked as a freelance translator translating numerous articles and books from Chinese into English in the field of Buddhist philosophy and history; completed book-length translations include: "Buddhist History;" "Bright Star, Luminous Cloud: Life of a Simple Monk;" and "The Characteristics of Phenomena: Keys to Understanding the Profound Insights of Buddhism." In August of 2007, he joined the teaching staff of the Graduate Division of the Foreign Languages Department, Shenzhen University. Contact Email Address: simalun@gmail.com.

Dr Mark Williams is a Professor in the School of Foreign Languages researching enhanced communication through the use of Internet and computer translation tools, the value of creating poetic from literal translations of modern Chinese harmonious love poems, and continuous improvement as a brilliant teacher of English as a second language. He also consults to Shenzhen Ocean City (www.ednet5senses.com) and as Academic Director (Corporate and Professional) with the Australasia College of Education (www.acepostgraduate.com).

Dr. Susan Lynn King: a Canadian from British Columbia, near Vancouver, B.A., B.Ed., Diploma in English Studies, M.Ed., Ph.D. in English, History and Philosophy from the University of Toronto (Canada), Queen¡¯s University (Canada), University of Edinburgh (Scotland).  She also received a pilot¡¯s license before she received a driver¡¯s license, a radio license, and a diploma in Landscape Design from Ryerson University (Canada).  She is presently enrolled in an M.A. program in Intercultural Communication at Royal Roads University in Victoria, Canada.
